The Scrabble Challenge

OK, I'm shamelessly ripping off this idea from the good group of people over at pedrothelion.org/forum (on a side note, I like how the spell checker for Blogger tries to replace pedrothelion.org with betrothal). I'm itching for a little online Scrabble to test my skills. Who's in?

Visit e-Scrabble to get an idea of what I'm talking about. You just set up a game with four e-mail addresses and then everyone throws in their word when they get a chance. This could take years to finish!

I hold a certain fondness for games that take a long time to complete. For instance, myself and Gavin playing a best-of-seven series of one-on-one basketball that lasted the entire summer of '95 (or was it '96? Either way, this is something that I really need to write about at some point). Another example: I recall when Carl and I played a game of Monopoly that must have lasted a week. Risk holds that same attraction. There's something to be said for knowing that you must invest a significant portion of time. It makes the pay-off all the sweeter.

Its like when you sit down with the Sports Night DVD box set and try to watch all of the episodes in chronological order. You know this is going to take a couple weeks, but ultimately, you know you'll be a better person for having done it. This is practically the same thing.

If you miss out this time maybe we can work you in for the next game. Maybe we could work out a "winner stays" rule like playground basketball.

So, who's in? Bottom line: I'm taking the first three people who e-mail me (you know my address). No excuses.

I just wanted to say that the lack of response to this is appalling. You should all be ashamed of yourselves.

OK, I started one up for you and me. Hey, this could be fun. My first word is "JOSH". How about that?

Well, at least we've got something going. I still can't believe that not one person e-mailed me about this. For shame. Come on, people!

Of course, its entirely possible that no one reads this blog any more. I mean, why would they?

It's not that...I just didn't feel like scrabble at the time.

I've got news for you, Jer. Some of us have lives. That being said, I'm in, and it's your turn. :)

Yeah, when you said "long time to complete," I immediately counted myself out.

It would have taken longer with four people because not everyone will be right on top of it. Are you in for the next one?

I just wanted to let everyone know that I am the e-Scrabble champion. Joshua couldn't even finish the game; he chickened out with just a few pieces left. Oh well.

Who's ready to start up another. I hear that Angie is in.

I wouldn't go so far as to call it giving up. Granted, I did click the Give Up button. However, I had only a Q left, nowhere to play it, no way to exchange tiles, and no way to pass my turn. I think there are some serious gaps in the online Scrabble game. There's lots of things you can't do that you should, and there are things you can do that you shouldn't. As an example, last night Angie played IRAQ off in a corner to get a triple word score, even though she didn't connect the word to any other word. It was just hanging out there. That's not right!

I do agree that the whole thing needs to mature quite a bit (although there is a "Pass Turn" button, but maybe you missed it).

Another tip that I read about was that the last word is never reversable. So if you want you could just play any old string of letters as long as there's nothing left in the bag (QZFUNAJ off anything). That way you get the extra 50 points and you've gone out first. There should be a way to challenge the last play.

Also, the ability to look up words in the dictionary right from the site is pretty poor. Why are we encouraging cheating? The challenge functionality is also pretty weak, too.

All that being said you can still have a good time with it. You just need to have some trustworthy players, people that have some respect for themselves.

So who's in for the next game?
